Implementation of China's National IV Emission Standard for Off-Road Mobile Machinery Promotes the Transformation of Diesel Forklift Industry to Electric and Hybrid Drive

2024 09/04

With the increasingly stringent environmental regulations and the deepening of global consensus on energy saving and emission reduction, China's off-road mobile machinery emission standards have officially entered the ‘National IV’ era. At the recent Bauma exhibition, a landmark scene appeared: major international and domestic engine manufacturers have launched new products that comply with China's National IV emission standard for off-road mobile machinery, showing the industry's rapid response to the new emission requirements and its positive stance on technological advancement.

The off-road National IV emission standard released this time has significantly tightened the emission limits for nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter, with the limits for particulate matter being particularly stringent, requiring a reduction of 50% to 94%. In order to comply with this standard, not only does it require innovation in existing engine technology, but it also prompts the industry to transition to cleaner powertrains, such as electric and hybrid powertrains.

Specifically, the engines equipped with traditional diesel forklift trucks must be equipped with an advanced after-treatment system on top of the electric control system in order to meet the National IV emission standard. This after-treatment system can effectively reduce the emission of harmful substances in the exhaust gas, including but not limited to Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology and Particulate Filter (DPF). The application of these technologies not only enhances the environmental performance of diesel forklift trucks, but also promotes the technological innovation and industrial upgrading of the whole industry.

Further, the implementation of the National IV emission standard is not only a challenge to China's off-road mobile machinery industry, but also an important opportunity to promote the transformation and upgrading of the industry. In order to meet the new emission standards, diesel forklift manufacturers need to invest more R&D resources to explore and adopt more efficient and environmentally friendly power solutions. In this process, the development trend of electric and hybrid technologies is becoming more and more obvious, which not only helps to reduce environmental pollution, but also meets the global trend of energy transformation and sustainable development.

From the market response, the promotion and application of new technologies have increased manufacturing costs, but also provided new market opportunities for diesel forklift manufacturers. New forklift products that are environmentally friendly, efficient and energy-saving are more likely to be favoured by the market, especially in the context of the tightening of environmental protection policies and the enhancement of users' awareness of environmental protection.

Overall, the implementation of China's off-road National IV emission standard signifies that the domestic diesel forklift industry has entered a new stage of development. Through technological innovation and industrial upgrading, new forklift trucks represented by electric and hybrid power will become the new favourite in the market, leading the industry to develop in a greener, smarter and more efficient direction.
